Next Training Session

What a great turn out for the first training of 2009! To have 16 blokes at this time of the year, out running the icy streets was awesome. For all those that missed out it started off with a 3km time trial that was done in groups. After that the boys stayed in the same groups and had the time of their lives taking part in a scavenger hunt / orienteering activity. They competed against each other doing activities such as sliding down snowy hills on cardboard, carrying each other through the snow, collecting women's business cards and trying to a kick goals through posts on an icy deck.

Next training is on wednesday January 21 at 7pm. The venue is still to be confirmed but will definitely be in an indoor session at a school gym in Burnaby. So please save this date and time.

We are still looking for new players, so please contact Matt Bell on 778-230-4312 or mattbell22@hotmail.com to join this great club.

Hilton's last Hurrah

After winning the prestigious Burnaby Eagles goal-kicking award, the Eagles were left reeling when Colin Hilton - club president - announced his resignation as President immediately.

Senior Eagles were stunned, not only by Hilton’s actions but also by his timing. One source close to the club said: “He has just won his first goal kicking award in 41 years. What is he thinking? Surely this is a time to promote himself. Not go into his shell and accept the award in the quite, humble manner that he did.”

In a bid to clear the air, Hilton has sent out a press release due to his shyness and dislike to public speaking.

“G’day everyone. Firstly I appologise for not fronting for a press conference but as you all are aware I find it difficult to talk for long periods of time. Therefore I thought it best that I announce it in writing, my resignation as President from the Burnaby Eagles Football Club effective immediately”.

“While I have only been president for 3 years, I believe it is time to pass the baton to another less capable man. Who that may be, I know not. What I do know is, whoever gets the job should strongly consider naming this goal-kicking award after me. All they need to do is ask. I am very obliging like that. Also, I would like this opportunity to announce I will be concentrating more on footy. I’ve always said I would be a pretty good player if I was fit”.

“After carrying the club and in particular the forward lines, I have decided in the best interest of the club that I fully focus on teaching our players how to kick goals”.

“I have built this club from the ground up with my bare hands. Just like Pete Taylor’s house, my handball targets, my trophies, the list goes on. I now intend to build our forward line from the ground up”.

Mr. Hilton who could not be contacted by phone today was spotted roadside along Highway 1 at about 2am Sunday morning, bending over with hands on knees. Perhaps he has already started his fitness campaign and decided to run home after the BC Footy awards night.

West is the Best

Burnaby Eagles are pleased to announce that the 2008 Best and Fairest player is Robert West. Westy had a sensational season and polled well in all the games he played. It was a great effort as Westy headed off on his travel adventures and missed the final two games of the season.

Dale "Slim" Handley was rewarded for his sensational season by picking up the runner up Best and fairest award.

Well done boys!

Full details on the night to come soon.

Eagles End Saints Undefeated Run

In what can only be described as a titanic struggle between the Burnaby Eagles and West Coast Saints, the Eagles were able to pull out a one point victory on the last kick of the day.  The game was played in perfect conditions at the "Hilton C G".  At the conclusion of the game the goal umpires were required to get their calculators out to determine the final score as both teams were uncertain of the official score.

It was a great team effort from the Eagles squad as many players were thrown into new positions on the field. Captain Brad Ramano did a great job holding down the fullback position and last season B&F Steve "PM" Harper had an enthralling battle with Saints forward Chip.
After the game veteran players Gary Cooper and Colin Hilton were both diagnosed with mild doses of leather poisoning.  Hilton in Eddie Betts like fashion was able to snag 3 crucial goals to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Big men Connor and Dale battled all day in the ruck and around the ground against much taller opponents. Choco, J.C. and Jimmy Hoffa put their bodies on the line and won their fair share of contested possessions. Freemo, Robin, Pete Taylor and Justin also elected to strap on the boots even though they were all struggling with an assortment of debilitating  aliments. Plugger and Morgs put their ample bodies to good use around the packs and made sure that if the Saints did get a possession they had certainly earned it.

Tickets Wakefield did a fantastic job coaching the team and kept the playing group focused on the task at hand. Two North Delta Juniors made their debut for the Eagles, both players made great contributions throughout the match and look certain to have a lot of senior footy ahead of them. Overall it was a great team effort
